Dear Wine Lover My annual fishing expedition to “the forgotten island”, a remote atoll off the east coast of Timor Leste, was supposed to be the usual experience to remember (flying via an unknown airline company to Flores before Alors, staying in hotels where it is acceptable to pay by the hour…). Alas, it wasn’t to be. The night we were supposed to start our 7 days live-aboard extravaganza, I was informed that the boat was broken and in an irreparable state. We would have to cancel. As anglers who don’t give in easily, we headed to Labuan Baju, Komodo Island instead, and fished like young men. All of us are into the ‘life appreciating years’ and fishing in an open boat was admittedly challenging. But what I enjoy about fishing has never been about catching fish; it’s about spending time with good friends. Travelling to unusual destinations, meeting people with alternative perspectives on life and partaking in the journey...... This is the very same reason why I cherish being part of The Wine Companytm, it’s like fishing. We started as a bunch of people who love good wine, eager to share that appreciation with others, which gave us the courage to open in locations originally considered remote, and all in all, proudly offering another perspective on wine. That’s what it is all about, sharing experiences with friends. Ps: Komodo is a beautiful place, remote and very basic. It seems the locals use dynamite for fishing equipment. If only they understood the attributes of wine… Cheers and enjoy the experience.

One for the RoadFebruary is the month to celebrate love. Love is universal, and not just restricted to romantic love. This February, we are also taking the initiative to show our love and care to the people who matter to us, like family. Belinda Lim, partner at The Wine Companytm, shares her new understanding of love. “When you love someone, you wish that person is happy wherever he or she is. For me, this is ‘love’. Look out for Cupid, who is the Roman God of Love; a mischievous small fellow, pudgy, cute and blind-folded, who will take this opportunity to liberate all his ammunition. If you happen to be shot, cherish the tranquilising effect. I am going through a period of sadness because I lost my Mum recently. She is in God’s dwelling place where there is no pain, grief and crying. I will bring along a bottle of champagne when I see her again. Romance doesn’t last whereas love is forever. Whether you’re romancing or in love; savour this moment.”
